May Birthday Giveaway: Grow Great Grub

Today I've got a copy of Grow Great Grub [1]: Organic Food from Small Spaces by Gayla Trail. This book has a perfect combination of the information you need to grow your own food in containers, planting beds or community gardens, what to plant, how to care for it, and heaps of beautiful photographs to inspire you. I'm very intimidated by gardening and I find this book to be comforting. She covers everything I might like to grow but doesn't bury me in too many options. There are even recipes, tips on keeping or preserving and a section on how to can. This book is both a great place to start, and has lots of information for those gardeners who are looking to polish their food growing skills. And if you don't already follow it Gayla's site You Grow Girl [2] is full of great information. Gayla is one of those people whom I've known online for years and years. (I find myself saying that a lot lately!)

If you'd like to win a copy of You Grow Girl please leave a comment with this post. You've got until Tuesday, May 17th at 10am PST to enter, the fine print [3] applies. Here is something to talk about if you'd like: Have you ever eaten anything you grew yourself? I am terrible with plants so the most I've managed is using my own rosemary and thyme, but my dad is a gardener and grows blueberries and wild strawberries (which are delicious). Ok, good luck! Closed! Thanks for entering.

experiments in Rainbow Cakes

This past St. Patrick's Day I made a Leprechaun Trap Cake [1], shown above, which revealed a nice rainbow shape inside each slice. I created the rainbow by pouring colored cake batter into an angel food cake pan one color on top of the other and it came out surprisingly well. (More details on the amounts of colored batter I used are in the original post [2].) At the time I wondered if doubling the recipe or using different cake pans would result in the same effect and I've made a half dozen cakes over the past month to find out. The results are below and it turns out the answer is "nope".

For each of the following cakes I used the same boxed white cake mix, the same gel food colorings and the same technique to layer the batter.

Two boxes of cake mix in an angel food cake pan. For my original cake I used one box of cake mix in this same angel food cake pan. Doubling the amount makes a big difference and the cake almost spilled over the top of the pan while baking. If I'd leveled this one I would have had a swoopy and uneven rainbow, but it would have been there.

Half a box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. This was my most successful test variation. The cake shown has been leveled and turned out onto a plate, each slice had half a rainbow.

One box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. I was hoping that the flat bottom of the cake pan with lots of batter would result in a tall rainbow, but instead I got something that looks more like a volcano. I didn't level this cake.

Half a box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. I hoped the flat bottom of a loaf pan would give me similar results to the bundt pan but the batter didn't quite behave the same way. I leveled this cake before cutting into it and didn't realize that the leveled top held all the blue and purple colors, so I put it back on for the sake of the picture.

One box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. Another loaf pan experiment this time with twice the batter, and another volcano like result.

Two boxes of cake mix in a round mixing bowl. Here again I was hoping a tall cake would result in a nice tall rainbow. I didn't get that but I did get some very impressive swirling down the center of the cake and back up around the sides of the bowl. The center of this cake never quite baked. A failure all around but it's pretty cool to see how the batter moves while it's baking.

My conclusion is that using less batter in a flat bottomed pan will more likely result in the rainbow arch I was hoping for. And that I got very, very lucky for the first version of this cake [3] that I made to come out so nicely. Call it the luck of the Irish?

May Birthday Giveaways!

Hi, hello, hi there. This May marks the tenth year of Not Martha, ten years! A whole decade! To celebrate I'm holding giveaways each weekday in May filled with stuff I love from people I know. It's gonna be fun.

Looking back at the archives I see the first post was on May 22nd, 2001 and I only posted six things that month. The very first post to this site was about a kit that helps you put gifts inside of balloons [1] (sadly, a dead link), the second post was about a long time love of mine the Meathead [2] (miraculously it's still there [3], it's a plastic skull covered with red jello then layers of cold cuts to be served at Halloween and the reason I called my meatloaf hand the Meat Hand [4]), my third post was a list of stuff I liked [5] including retro video games, cookbooks and dishes made of sugar. Posts four [6], five [7] and six [8] are regarding Fluevog shoes that leave hoof prints, gasses that preserve a half empty bottle of wine, and the article in Salon that mentions a magazine that would be published sometime later that year, it was called "Readymade". Taking just the first six posts into consideration I'm gonna go ahead and say this here site hasn't changed much in the past decade. It really doesn't seem like that long.

Each giveaway will take entries for about 24 hours and the first one will be tomorrow morning. Good luck everybody!

giveaway: Yolo Colorhouse Design Kits

Yolo Colorhouse [1] wants you to know that their paint is now available in Lowe's stores [2] on the West Coast, and to help spread the word they are offering one lucky reader some useful things, more on that below. To celebrate the introduction the paint is being offered at a special price [3], yipee. Go see more about this [4], and find out which select stores the paint will be available in.

Yolo Colorhouse makes gorgeous zero-VOC paint which means it's good for you, your home and the environment. They are both Green Seal [5] certified and has a whole bunch of LEED rating points [6]. I first learned about Yolo Colorhouse when we bought our first home and painted every wall, ceiling and door with zero-VOC paint (I would have painted the floors too, but half are already pretty nice and the other half are carpet). Yolo Colorhouse has amazing colors, each one is richly pigmented and seems to spring from nature. I wasn't surprised to find that the women who founded the company actually started with color [7], custom mixing it on the spot for clients, and was followed by researching and creating paint that would be healthier for themselves and the dwellings they put it in. They call themselves color nerds! Their designer sensibilities also show in how they present the paint, they sell poster-sized samples of the actual paint which you can hang on the wall of you choice to see how it acts in the light in that space and there is no need to paint a swatch on your wall (something I find perilous and more work than it seems). Or, if you're getting ready to make some paint choices for your home, you can order a Design Kit which are books of 8x8 samples of all the colors they offer. Which brings us back to the giveaway!

Yolo Colorhouse would like to give a reader both of their Design Kits [8], each is worth $80. One set contains The Earth's Color [9] collection and the second contains both The Color of Hope [10] collection as well as the Sprout [11] collection which is a range of lovely pastels suitable for childrens rooms. Each sample card lists three companion colors on the back as well as a note on the color. My favorite, Petal .02, says "Hot lime - full of energy. Try it with black and white - makes for a lively contemporary kitchen or for an accent in a kid's play room." Petal .01 reports "Make no mistake, Petal .01 is loud and vibrant. An orange designed to be used sparingly, unless you want to live loud." Each kit is bound using a metal ring that is easy to unclasp so you can hold up individual samples as needed. In addition to the design kits you'll get an organic cotton tote bag and a BPA-free water bottle. Excellent, right?

Are you a designer? Or just fixing up your house and anticipating needing some time to obsess over colors? These are meant for you. If you think these Design Kits would come in handy you can enter this giveaway simply by leaving a comment with this post. If you'd like something to chat about (I love reading all the responses) please answer this question: Which color would you paint your ideal kitchen? I think I'd go with a sunny yellow to keep my spirits up during our overcast winter days. You've got until Tuesday, June 14th to enter, the fine print [12] applies and the winner will be chosen by the Random Number Generator. Just so you know: This a sponsored giveaway, from a company I like.

Alright, good luck! Done! I'll be announcing the winning number once I've heard back. Thanks so much for entering everybody!

May Birthday Giveaway: Super Natural Every Day

[1]

This month Not Martha will be 10 years old. Ten years! To celebrate I'm holding a giveaway each weekday, they'll be filled with stuff I love made by people I know. Here we go.

I'm super happy to have a copy of Heidi Swanson's book Super Natural Every Day [2] to offer as our first giveaway. Heidi's site, 101 Cookbooks [3] is one of those sites I've been reading for years and years and our cookbook club chose her first book, Super Natural Cooking [4], for our first meeting and everything was a delicious success. With Super Natural Every Day Heidi has given us simpler and quicker recipes that I cannot wait to make. The book is broken up into Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, Drinks and Treats and has a collection of tips that I've found myself trusting Heidi to know. (Eggs from really awesome small farms actually are more difficult to peel! It's not my imagination!) Did I mention this book is vegetarian? It is. I hardly noticed though. I ate dinner just shortly before I am typing this and the photos are making me hungry again.

You want this book. To enter please leave a comment with this entry, you have until Tuesday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. If you'd like please answer this question: Have you ever cooked with dandelion greens? I'll go first: I have not, but there is a recipe for Chickpeas & Dandelion Greens in this book that is very simple (seven ingredients!) and I'm gonna try it. Alright, good luck everybody! Closed! Thank you for entering!

New Comment on Very Special Box

453_main_445 Just reading the title of this project I knew exactly what it was. My grandmother gave one to my mom when I was very little, and my mom gave it to me when I went to college. Last Christmas my mom gave one to my niece; I tearing up now just thinking about it. If you do make this for someone, or if you have one yourself - be sure to keep it some where you'll semi-regularly find it, maybe three or four times a month. I keep mine with my recipes, which doesn't say much about how often I cook, but I always smile when I see it again. Mine varies slightly in the wording, and you can see it has a little flexibility there. Now that I'm thinking about this, I've just decided to give one to all of my friends this year. This comment is so personal, I'm sorry for anyone who suffered through till the very end!

May Birthday Giveaway: Hellimae?s Salt Caramels

[1]

What's going on here? This May marks 10 years of Not Martha. To celebrate I'm holding giveaways from some of my most favorite companies.

Today I've got a very exciting gift, a three-month subscription to Hellimae's Salt Caramels [2]. Each month you'll get a different flavor, maybe even something special she's thought up. I've had Hellimae's and they are something to behold, huge chunks of soft, buttery caramel with sparkling jewels of salt on top. They are delicious. Ellen, the proprietress, has only recently started offering a caramel subscription so please allow me to point out how lovely a gift this would make for a loved one with a sweet tooth.

If you'd like to win the 3-month subscription to Hellimae's Salt Caramels please leave a comment with this post. And if you'd like something to chat about answer this question: Have you ever made homemade caramel? I have, but the first time I attempted it I didn't own a candy thermometer and they turned out burnt. And not good-burnt either. Ok, you've got until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11th to enter, the fine print [3] applies and due to the perishable nature of the caramels I'm afraid that we can only ship them to addresses inside the US and Canada (sorry). Good luck! Closed! Thank you to, wow, everybody who entered!

My RSS feed broke, the engine light in my car is on, I was late to meet a friend at the bakery and when I got there I knocked a vase off of a table in a dramatic fashion, the cap of a Sharpie in my bag came off leaving some ugly black spots and when I got home I discovered I have a run in my Spanx. It's only 1:30 in the afternoon. I sincerely hope your day is going better than mine.

update: I also forgot to put a title on this post, which I've just fixed. Hey, if you are looking at this in a feed reader and cannot see the moody photo of the offending Sharpie let me know and I'll try to figure out why RSS might still be broken. My thanks!

dailyish photo: my mixing bowls

My mixing bowls, from the outside in:

The big yellow bowl was purchased during the summer I worked in the costume shop of the Santa Fe Opera during college. My roommate and I bought this on a trip to Target when we realized we needed popcorn, booze and warm blankets to make it through the summer. The dry air and cold nights there resulted in me getting strep throat for the first time in my life. We didn't have a television in our apartment and I couldn't afford a computer so my roommate bought me one of those black and white flocked posters that come with markers for you to fill in, you can still find them in drug stores. It was a stained glass window, or something. I was so bored I spent hours trying to figure out how to fill it in so that none of the colors would be next to one another. I also read The Mists of Avalon. Twice.

The two largest orange bowls were purchased the second year that Scott and I lived in Seattle, when we rented a house in Ballard. It is a short walk away from where Delancey opened up after we moved away, how I wish we still lived there. It was a three-bowl set from Williams-Sonoma and buying them was one of those "I'm finally a grown up!" moments for me. After only a few weeks I broke the smallest bowl in the set, my favorite one, when I dropped it while doing dishes. It cracked right in half. Which make me feel not so much a grown up. The rubber feet on these bowls are light blue, a detail which I adore.

The medium orange bowl was purchased earlier this year at a Ross that opened in my neighborhood. The Ross was clean but shockingly sparse, more like mostly empty Goodwill. It was incredibly depressing and a bit disorienting. Suddenly there was this shiny orange melamine bowl looking like it was waiting just for me. Then I found a second shiny orange bowl a little further down on the shelf. They are just about the size of the bowl I broke, so I bought both.

The smallest four (orange, green, yellow, blue) were a birthday present from Scott last year and they make for very happy prep. The blue one is so cute and petite, it's smaller than a teacup, that I find myself just holding it because I find it so pleasing. Scott bought them at the Moma store while he was in New York with Kirby Krackle. He also visited Mood during that trip simply so that he could snap a picture for me. I wasn't jealous at all.

thing I like: Egg-Perfect egg timer

[1]

Look, I know these have been around forever but our household just got a hold of one of these for the first time and we really like the Egg-Perfect egg timer [2]. In case you are also in the camp that has not yet encountered this I will fill you in: should you like some hard boiled but not too hard boiled eggs this little gadget sits pan with them and the outer edge changes color gradually as they cook. It has markings for "soft/medium/hard" so you can pull your eggs when they are just right. Awesomeness.

May Birthday Giveaway: Embroidery Companion

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm tickled to have a copy of Alicia Paulson's second book Embroidery Companion: Classic Designs for Modern Living [1] to give to one lucky winner. Alicia is one of those people I've known online for almost as long as I've had an internet connection, and whom I'm happy to say is just as awesome and warm in person, and I adore the love and care she puts into all her work. Her take on embroidery shows a fondness for the past but has a modern and cheerful way about it. She also has a delightful blog, Posie Gets Cozy [2] where she talks about food, dogs, gardening and the joys of hammocks. And she produces patterns for sewing, crochet and embroidery as well as offering the occasional carefully compiled craft kits which sell out crazy fast, her latest was the Daisychain ABC Sampler [3], and I love her felt Christmas ornaments [4]. You can find everything at her online shop Rosy Little Things [5].

If you'd like to win the copy of Embroidery Companion please leave a comment with this post and, if you'd like, answer this question: What is the first craft you remember doing? Though my mother has evidence of earlier creations the first thing I remember was using cut fruit as stamps to decorate t-shirts on a rainy afternoon during a vacation. Your turn, you've got until Friday, May 27th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [6] applies. Good luck! Closed, thank you so much for entering!

New Comment on Wheat Heat Pack

1231_main_imgp2063 Yay!!! I finally know what to do with all the old grain!!! For the people complaining about the wheat being wet, try drying it out more before you use it. All grain is tested for moisture content when it is sold to the grain elevators. You will need to dry it out more if it is too wet... you can air dry or roast it on LOW heat in the oven.

dailyish photo: new bicycle helmets

The other day we bought new bicycle helmets. I chose a Giro Indicator and I like it because it has a little adjustment wheel on the back so it fits snuggly but it's not headache inducing, and it's really well ventilated. It was on sale at REI, and the one I picked (White/Silver) is even cheaper on Amazon [1] right now. Yay for bicycling.

dailyish photo: my mixing bowls
