Make your own tea towels

I love tea towels (also known as dish towels) - collecting vintage tea towels is fun (I also love commemorative tea towels too) – but making your own is really easy and satisfying and they make great gifts too. In 18th century England, a tea towel was a special linen drying cloth used by the [...]

May Birthday Giveaway: Troubadour Tote from Crystalyn Kae

[1]

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Welcome to Wednesday and it's giveaway: a Trourbadour Tote Bag [2] in the color of your choice from Crystalyn Kae. This is an awesome bag, it can fit a laptop (up to a 15" Macbook), has many useful interior pockets (go see the pictures [3]), a zipper top, and a gathered design in front that allows you to stuff the bag should you need (it can hold a water bottle and a pair of shoes, I see possibilities here). I see Crystalyn Kae bags on the shoulders of girls wherever I go in Seattle, her Topstitch Hobo [4] seems to be a favorite (at least from my highly unscientific pole of, well, my observations) and she always has a nice big booth at UCU [5] (a big craft and handmade goods show here in Seattle that is worth traveling for). Crystalyn Kae bags are made from an embossed coated canvas which is lightweight and waterproof (necessary here) and it can even be thrown into the washer. The bags are all made by hand in the US and it's very good construction (I have examined it), have comfortable handles, most of them are vegan (unless otherwise noted), and have perfectly chosen contrasting lining. One of her newest items is the Pleated Clutch [6] and I think I have a crush on it.

If you'd like to win the fabulous Troubadour Tote Bag please leave a comment with this post, and if you'd like something to chat about answer this question: Do you prefer your bags in neutrals or bright colors? Me? I have been trying my utmost to buy bags in bright colors since my wardrobe stubbornly, perhaps reliably, stays in the range of black to gray. Having colorful bags means I can accessorize to my mood without thinking too much about it. So far it's working, I think. Alright, you have until 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 19th to enter, the fine print [7] applies. Good luck! Closed, thank you for entering!

I've been baking more sizes and shapes of rainbow cakes [1] to see if I can recreate the nice rainbow arch in different pans. So far the answer is a very big no. Perhaps picking the right shape of cake pan on my first try was the luck of the Irish? I'll update the original how-to with my findings.

Above is my attempt at Tiffany blue frosting which turned out far too pastel.

Jars of Stars for the Bakesale for Japan

For the Bakesale for Japan [1] last weekend I made something I decided to call Jars of Stars. These are simply very small star shaped cookies presented in jars. I think stuff in jars for a bakesale are fantastic, jars are visually interesting and useful for future uses. And you can charge a bit more than you might think, a good thing when the money is being raised for a great cause. I've previously made cobbler in jars [2], pudding in jars [3] and pies in jars [4]. Cake and cupcakes in jars [5] are also perfect, especially if sold with a bamboo fork or spork attached.

Image above taken by the wonderful Kairu Yao [6] and used with permission, thanks! You can see all of her bakesale photos here [7].

This time I was inspired by these tiny heart cookies [8] which I spied first on Oh Happy Day [9]. I used this Pepperkaker [10] recipe at Dabbler because I knew it would come out crunchy and strong enough to be piled together. I did find myself wishing it was a bit spicier, I might add more black pepper next time. One note: that recipe makes a huge amount, I had to halve all the ingredients to a batch into my Kitchenaid mixer. I switched to the dough hook after the first addition of flour because the dough does get very stiff.

I ran out of time so my very awesome husband Scott [11] made the labels (thanks, you're the best!). We printed them out onto cardstock and cut circles to fit between the pieces of the lid. The back side of the cardstock holds the ingredients list.

I made four small sizes of stars. I had to draw cookie cutters from a few sources to get the small sizes. The smallest on is from a set of aspic cutters [12] (the smallest sized set), the next size up is actually from a Linzer cookie set [13], and the two largerst were from a many stars [14] set. All the cutters I used were from Fox Run as I found I liked the nice sharp angles on those the best. I bought all mine from Home Cake Decorating Supply [15] here in Seattle who always has just what I'm looking for.

This is the size one larger than the tiniest, for scale.

I cut them out and then popped them out from the cutter using the blunt end of a chopstick. No matter what I tried, flouring, oiling, chilling the dough or the cutters, they all needed to be popped back out. It took a while but with some WTF [16] podcasts it went quickly. The cookies don't spread, but they do puff enough when baked to get rid of any marks left by poking them back out of the cookie cutters.

I added non perils to a few batches of the smaller stars. I love non perils. They made the jar look a bit more interesting and didn't add a lot of work for me.

We filled the jars carefully so each one would get a good mix and that was it. If you keep the cardboard box that canning jars come in they make perfect carriers to deliver to the bake sale. I wish I had used jars with smooth sides, it would have been easier to view the star shapes inside.

I think it was a success, I sold three jars before I managed to get them set up on the tables! At the time I'm writing this the Bakesale for Japan [1] is still adding up the total but it's looking like the nationwide effort may have made more than $125K, wow. Thanks to Ciao Samin [18] for getting the whole thing together and thanks to everybody who organized and came to the Seattle bakesale!

How-To: Get Started with Make: Projects

Matt Richardson made this excellent video to show you how easy it is to get started using and contributing to Make: Projects.

For those of you eager to boast about your maker prowess, but haven't yet tried Make: Projects, I encourage you to take a look at this video to introduce you to what the site is all about and how it works. Make: Projects is a constantly growing cookbook for makers, so even if you're only looking for inspiration for your next project, there's a trove of ideas there. Some of my favorites include the wildly popular Doorstop Stash and the Mini Fume Extractor. Don't let your creations just sit in your workshop or basement, share them with your fellow makers on Make: Projects!

Subscribe to the MAKE Podcast in iTunes, download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube and Vimeo.

May Birthday Giveaway: a CSA share from Juniper Moon Farm

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to say that Juniper Moon Farm [1] has offered a Yarn CSA [2] for one lucky reader, the 2012 Spring Shearing worth $175 (that's some serious yarn). The Yarn CSA works like a farm CSA but instead you get a yield of the scrumptious yarn that is produced from the sheep and goats they lovingly raise. Juniper Moon Farm is amazing run by a small group of people who are dedicated to what they do and are fantastic about sharing what is going on with share holders, visitors, and readers of their blog. The farm was started by Susan, whom I've followed since she started (back then it was the Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm, which you might remember if you've been reading my site long enough) and I'm astounded and so pleased to watch how it's grown. If you're not already I encourage you to read the blog [3], follow along as lambs are born in the spring on the LambCams [4], see what the farm dogs [5] are up to, you can attend shearing day [6] and even stay at the farm [7] for a week or long weekend. It's really amazing to watch the farm work all year and then find yarn at your door that reflects all of the care and attention that they put into it. I just want to hug the whole farm. The blog isn't just about the farm, I've loved all the Probably Something You Would Like [8] links posts, her recent pictures from Preakness [9], her famous world's greatest granola recipe [10] and how she went paper towel free on the whole farm [11] (it involves making a lot of your own cloth napkins [12], enough so you always have plenty of clean ones).

Would you like to win this amazing Yarn CSA? If so please leave a comment with this entry and let me know the following: Have you ever spent time on a farm? I spent a few summers on my uncle's farm in Oklahoma, he had cattle, two greyhounds, a small lake with a rope swing, a tiny farmhouse and bales of hay that seemed to be piled taller than the house itself. I loved it there. Ok, you've got until Tuesday, May 24th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [13] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

giveaway: Modern Log Cabin Quilting

I'm so pleased to be showing you Susan Beal's latest book, Modern Log Cabin Quilting [1], and offering a sweet giveaway today. You can read why Susan loves log cabin quilting [2] and view projects from the book made by others at the Flickr group [3].

This book introduces you to log cabin quilts, gives you all the information you need to sew your own, including tools and techniques, and offers a range of projects.

This is the Bright Furrows quilt, I like the cheerful colors. There are a whole range of quilts using both huge blocks and lots of small ones. There are a number of special quilt projects including a t-shirt quilt to save those worn out shirts that hold memories, an Anniversary quilt and the cozy Winter Woolens quilt.

Above is the Northwest Modern quilt, I like how it's random. There is also a whole section on household items like tea towls, aprons, pillow cases and a pincushion.

I like the Red Cross bag which uses both corduroy and cotton fabrics. There are a nuber of bags, including a super simple drawstring bag, a zipper pouch, and a market tote. (A way to use up your fabric stash and make gifts at the same time!)

This Charming Camera Case is easy (and uses some stealth velcro).

I'm thoroughly charmed by the quilts and projects in this book, they are fresh and inspiring. So I'm very happy to have both a copy of the book and a fabric kit to give away. If you'd like to enter please leave a comment with this post, and if you'd like please do take the time to share any quilting projects (or disasters) you've undertaken. I'll go first: I've never quilted anything! Clearly I will have to change that very soon. You have until noon Pacific time on Thursday, April 7th to enter. The usual fine print [4] applies. Good luck! The winner as chosen by the Random Number Generator is #45, Emily. Congrats! And thanks to everybody for entering!

Antique Doll Head Planters

doll_head_planters1.jpg

Retired high school art teacher Dolores Duenez makes interesting (and slightly unnerving) planters out of antique doll heads.

A few years ago, I was given a box of unfinished doll heads from a doll maker's estate sale. I used some of the heads for still-life set ups in the classroom, and the rest I placed in my garden. The following spring, plants were growing from the doll heads. I decided then that doll heads would make strange and interesting planters.

She sells them in her Etsy shop, Plants on the Brain.

May Birthday Giveaway: Super Natural Every Day

[1]

This month Not Martha will be 10 years old. Ten years! To celebrate I'm holding a giveaway each weekday, they'll be filled with stuff I love made by people I know. Here we go.

I'm super happy to have a copy of Heidi Swanson's book Super Natural Every Day [2] to offer as our first giveaway. Heidi's site, 101 Cookbooks [3] is one of those sites I've been reading for years and years and our cookbook club chose her first book, Super Natural Cooking [4], for our first meeting and everything was a delicious success. With Super Natural Every Day Heidi has given us simpler and quicker recipes that I cannot wait to make. The book is broken up into Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, Drinks and Treats and has a collection of tips that I've found myself trusting Heidi to know. (Eggs from really awesome small farms actually are more difficult to peel! It's not my imagination!) Did I mention this book is vegetarian? It is. I hardly noticed though. I ate dinner just shortly before I am typing this and the photos are making me hungry again.

You want this book. To enter please leave a comment with this entry, you have until Tuesday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. If you'd like please answer this question: Have you ever cooked with dandelion greens? I'll go first: I have not, but there is a recipe for Chickpeas & Dandelion Greens in this book that is very simple (seven ingredients!) and I'm gonna try it. Alright, good luck everybody! Closed! Thank you for entering!

With the flowers finally beginning to bloom here in the Pacific Northwest, I'm loving these cheery fabric-covered clay pots by Christine Chitnis. Couldn't you see these as a pretty packaging for a gift of assorted bulbs?

With the last Harry Potter movie looming, make a fun keepsake for the Potter-phile in your life. These wall hangings of our three heros, Harry, Hermione, and Ron (as they appear in LEGO form), will look great in any fan's room. Made out of Perler (or fuse) beads, kids can make these too, with the help of an adult.

Flower Petal Stained Glass Windows

flower_stained_glass_windows.jpg

I love the fresh, playful feeling of these contact paper flower petal stained glass windows from Jean of The Artful Parent. As she mentions in the comments, she arranged the petals on the contact paper and then sandwiched them directly on to the glass. If you were worried about the contact paper not coming off easily, you could also try sandwiching them between two pieces of contact paper and then hang them in a window.

How-To: Pencil Skirt From Scratch

pencil_skirt_from_scratch.jpg

A pencil skirt is one of my favorite fashion items. It's timeless, classic and always sophisticated and a bit flirty. I may spend most of my time in jeans and Chucks, but I wouldn't mind having more occasions for which a pencil skirt would be in order. This tutorial from Lizzie of C&C shows how you can make a pencil skirt without using a pattern. With a few measurements and pinning, you can whip up a custom pencil skirt in no time. May Birthday Giveaway: good stuff from Rakka Deer

Today I'm happy to have a bunch of goods from local artist Rakka Deer [1], aka Kris. She's got style and wit, and she's got a huge number of projects going on at any given time. It amazes me. Besides Rakka Deer [2] and her Etsy shop [3] she has 37 Confections [4], Stupid Fucking Awesome [5], Excheckered [6], Pax and Ak [7], Skull Diggery [8], Suspect and Fugitive [9], a Tumblr [10] and Glitter Pissing [11]. She's offering up some good stuff from her shop: a six pack of geek cards [12], a thread painting [13] and a six pack of Inigo Montoya [14] cards featuring a drawing she did of the character over a pile of Hello My Name Is stickers (this still makes me laugh).

And while I'm talking about Rakka Deer please allow me to mention this: Recently the town she grew up in was devastated by the tornadoes and flooding along the Mississippi so she's raising money by holding a Bake Sale for the South [15], which is happening at the Cakespy Shop [16] here in Seattle on Saturday, May 14th at 11 a.m. I'll be baking for it (something in jars, but of course). Also on Saturday is the Great American Bake Sale
for ?Share Our Strength? at the uptown Metropolitan Market starting at 9:30 a.m. Two bake sales! Seattle is in luck.

To win the package of items from Rakka Deer please leave a comment with this website. You've got until Saturday, May 14th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [17] applies. If you'd like something to chat about answer this question: What is your favorite thing to make for, or buy at, bake sales? Clearly I enjoy making stuff in jars. Alright, good luck!

Kid's Kitchen: Fruity Yogurt Dip

In the Kitchen

may-kidskitchen-strawberrydip-overhead-closeup.jpg

By Katie Goodman

Many kids will try just about anything as long as they have something yummy to dip it in. I say many, not all, because my 6 year old doesn't fit into this category. But my daughter is a natural born dipper.

Chicken, grilled potatoes, hot dogs, and fish are all gobbled with gusto when dipped in ketchup. Just about any vegetable is beloved with a dabble of ranch dressing to dip them in. While fruit tastes sweet all by itself, it's even more fun to dip it in this Strawberry Yogurt Dip.

May Birthday Giveaway: Grow Great Grub

Today I've got a copy of Grow Great Grub [1]: Organic Food from Small Spaces by Gayla Trail. This book has a perfect combination of the information you need to grow your own food in containers, planting beds or community gardens, what to plant, how to care for it, and heaps of beautiful photographs to inspire you. I'm very intimidated by gardening and I find this book to be comforting. She covers everything I might like to grow but doesn't bury me in too many options. There are even recipes, tips on keeping or preserving and a section on how to can. This book is both a great place to start, and has lots of information for those gardeners who are looking to polish their food growing skills. And if you don't already follow it Gayla's site You Grow Girl [2] is full of great information. Gayla is one of those people whom I've known online for years and years. (I find myself saying that a lot lately!)

If you'd like to win a copy of You Grow Girl please leave a comment with this post. You've got until Tuesday, May 17th at 10am PST to enter, the fine print [3] applies. Here is something to talk about if you'd like: Have you ever eaten anything you grew yourself? I am terrible with plants so the most I've managed is using my own rosemary and thyme, but my dad is a gardener and grows blueberries and wild strawberries (which are delicious). Ok, good luck! Closed! Thanks for entering.

Education Day at Maker Faire Bay Area 2011 (video)

Maker Faire Education Day is opportunity for schools from near and far to bring their students to a sneak preview of Maker Faire. Some of our most engaging makers hosted 1600 kids and everyone had an amazing time. The students roamed from exhibit to exhibit learning about physics, chemistry, and technology. They interacted with electronic giraffes, robots, remote control cars, pedal powered devices and contraptions, electronic textiles, even Tesla coils.

RSS Woes

Hi everyone. There is a bit of trouble with my RSS feeds. We moved some stuff around the other day and it broke something else, and when we went to fix it yesterday it seems to have truncated the posts in readers, which was not my intention. Hang on for a bit and we'll fix it. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for letting me know it was happening.

Sylvia's Super Maker Show: Mod Podge

sylvia_modpodge.jpg

At Maker Faire, there are always opportunities for "fangirl" moments. Celebrities like Mike Rowe and Adam Savage will be around this weekend, but my big fangirl moment came yesterday when I stumbled in to Sylvia of Sylvia's Super Make Show. If you haven't seen Sylvia's videos before, take a moment to go watch them. She's one of the coolest kids I've ever seen. We were excited to hear that her most recent video has a crafty theme: Mod Podge. See how she makes block puzzles, custom chess or checker board and more.
