Beautiful Embroidery Samplers

embroidery_samplers_feather_stitch.jpg

Since we recently moved and undertook a massive home renovation, I haven't had much time to do my favorite craft of all: embroidery. Seeing these beautiful samplers from Craftster user, knohe, makes me really ache to pull out my hoop and floss. Simple rows of embroidery stitches make such a beautiful wall hanging, and are deeply therapeutic to stitch. I love the color choices and simple hoop hanging presentation.

How-To: Organize Your Crafting with Evernote

CZ_OrganizeIt.gif

evernote1.jpgImage by craftapalooza, via Flickr

By Andrea MacDonald

I love to do fiber craft. I weave, spin, knit, crochet, felt, and do Kumihimo. Keeping track of all the ideas, wish lists, yarns, tools, and patterns related to all my projects could be a full-time job. I have tried journals, file boxes, small and large plastic bins, various bags, and sketchpads to organize information for my projects. In the long run nothing worked for me, because invariably whatever I needed would be someplace else. I'd be in the car (riding, not driving) and wanted to graft the toe of a sock, but darned if I can remember the steps to Kitchener stitch. Or, on more than one occasion, much to my embarrassment, I bought the same knitting pattern twice!

About two years ago, I discovered a program called Evernote, and since then I've been in love, and I find myself actually organized! Evernote is like an electronic junk drawer - you can use it to capture webpages, PDF documents, photos, and audio notes. But unlike a physical junk drawer, you can find specific items in Evernote very easily, since you can organize your information by notebook (folder) and tag (keyword).

As a knitter, I keep notes on different techniques in Evernote, such as the one-row buttonhole or blanket stitch. I also keep notes on sizing for each person I've knitted something for. Other folks have gone farther than I have, keeping inventories of craft supplies and tools. In addition to using Evernote as a reference portfolio, I use it as a place to stash all my design ideas and many of my inspirations.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to import a PDF and a web page into Evernote. Before we do the actual importing, we'll look at the structure of the Evernote desktop screen.

Mother Boards as Art Canvases

mother_board_art.jpg

When Joe Dragt's office earmarked some 30 computers to be sent to recycling, he decided to step in and dismantle them himself. He scavenged the mother boards to use as canvases for his paintings.

Seeing the stack of old computers, the idea just struck me...the motherboards can make for a really neat canvas. The complexity and patterns of all the circuits could make for stunning backgrounds. I asked if I could take one computer home for a trial run, and it just blossomed from there.

How-To: Sturdy Milk Crate Storage

CZ_OrganizeIt.gif

craftzine_milk_crate_organizers_07_b.jpg

My closet is a disaster. It's the only closet in my house, and it has been over capacity since the day I moved in. There's space to hang coats and dresses, but my shoes, hats, scarves and belts were ending up trampled on the floor. I was dreaming of an extravagant custom built shelving unit, when a friend suggested quick and dirty cinder block shelves. I instantly thought of stacking milk crate shelves, but realized I could maximize space if I hung them from the wall.

I picked up some drywall anchors and big fat washers at the hardware store, and was able to hang my crates up in 15 minutes. Using drywall anchors means you don't have to find a stud in the wall, and these are removable too, so they can be taken down later without ruining the wall. The anchors are rated to hold 75 pounds each, and I easily installed them myself. The anchor "activates" by grabbing the flat end of the screw, so to provide is room for the crate and the washer to sit snugly, choose screws that are half an inch longer than the anchors. I've written about drywall anchors before, and I promise that after you get comfortable with them, you will feel empowered tackle all sorts of DIY projects that seemed out of reach.

How-To: Knit or Crochet a Dodecahedron

dodecahedron-knit1.jpg

This week's Math Monday over on MAKE had an awesome crafty bent.

If you knit, here's a stuffed, dodecahedral thing--I don't know quite what to call it--a toy, a pillow, a mathematical model? The shape is based on twelve 5-sided units like a dodecahedron. But they bump out, so the form is more like a small stellated dodecahedron. This was designed by Norah Gaughan, who provides instructions in this Berroco pattern.

For Easter I made papier-mache polka dotted eggs.

[2]

I made small pinatas using water balloons and tissue paper.

I filled them with candy, then sealed them shut.

You can also put toys or notes inside.

They have to be ripped to open them, which is way fun.

Tool Review: Silhouette Electronic Cutter

computersilhouette2.jpg

I recently got my hands on a Silhouette SD electronic cutter. It's a little computer-controlled craft robot with very sharp teeth! Use it to cut out designs for all sorts of things: paper crafts and scrapbooking, vinyl lettering, glass and metal etching, stencils, and anything else that involves precision cutting of small planar materials. There's some pretty neat stuff out there: sticky vinyl, flocked vinyl, magnet sheet, even temporary tattoo paper.

silhouette-midsummerlight.jpg

I really like this lamp Meg Allan Cole has hanging in her living room-- it's the Midsummer Light by Dutch designer Tord Boontje. I found a flat-ish picture of the design online and traced over it in Adobe Illustrator, setting to cut out some delicate flowers. Hit the jump for the results, the rest of the review, and a discount coupon code for the machine.

May Birthday Giveaway: jewelry from Dave Sheely Designs

[1]

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got two pairs of earrings and one hilarious ring from Dave Sheely Designs [2] for one lucky person. Dave knows his resins and uses only the highest quality in his jewelry, they don't discolor over time, don't shatter, and are scratch resistant (which means a bright orange ring I have of his has stayed as lovely and shiny as the day Scott gifted it to me!). Each of his pieces is hand colored and polished, and since Dave is a friend I can tell you a whole lot of care goes into each one. His designs combine bright colors and a sense of humor and often incorporate beach glass or tiny objects meticulously placed, take a look at his Floating Red Gemstone [3], or the Crystal Esther Ring [4] to see some of my favorites. Today I've got two pairs of textured earrings, one set of orange discs and one set of teal shapes (these earrings are super lightweight, I've held some), and one "Ring Finger Ring" (size 9) which is made to flip and point on it's own. Oh gosh that is so weird, I want one.

If you'd like to win this fabulous set of jewelry from Dave Sheely Designs please leave a comment with this post and, if you'd like something to talk about, answer this question: Have you ever lost a favorite piece of jewelry? I have, in high school I had a favorite chunky silver ring that held a particular sort of teenage symbolism for me. I lost it in the dressing room of a TJ Maxx while trying on prom dresses. I was heartbroken. Ever since then I tend to obsessively check to make sure my jewelry is in place (and it's also one big reason I didn't want a real diamond in my engagement/wedding ring). Ok, you've got until Wednesday, May 25th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: Hellimae?s Salt Caramels

[1]

What's going on here? This May marks 10 years of Not Martha. To celebrate I'm holding giveaways from some of my most favorite companies.

Today I've got a very exciting gift, a three-month subscription to Hellimae's Salt Caramels [2]. Each month you'll get a different flavor, maybe even something special she's thought up. I've had Hellimae's and they are something to behold, huge chunks of soft, buttery caramel with sparkling jewels of salt on top. They are delicious. Ellen, the proprietress, has only recently started offering a caramel subscription so please allow me to point out how lovely a gift this would make for a loved one with a sweet tooth.

If you'd like to win the 3-month subscription to Hellimae's Salt Caramels please leave a comment with this post. And if you'd like something to chat about answer this question: Have you ever made homemade caramel? I have, but the first time I attempted it I didn't own a candy thermometer and they turned out burnt. And not good-burnt either. Ok, you've got until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11th to enter, the fine print [3] applies and due to the perishable nature of the caramels I'm afraid that we can only ship them to addresses inside the US and Canada (sorry). Good luck! Closed! Thank you to, wow, everybody who entered!

giveaway: Modern Log Cabin Quilting

I'm so pleased to be showing you Susan Beal's latest book, Modern Log Cabin Quilting [1], and offering a sweet giveaway today. You can read why Susan loves log cabin quilting [2] and view projects from the book made by others at the Flickr group [3].

This book introduces you to log cabin quilts, gives you all the information you need to sew your own, including tools and techniques, and offers a range of projects.

This is the Bright Furrows quilt, I like the cheerful colors. There are a whole range of quilts using both huge blocks and lots of small ones. There are a number of special quilt projects including a t-shirt quilt to save those worn out shirts that hold memories, an Anniversary quilt and the cozy Winter Woolens quilt.

Above is the Northwest Modern quilt, I like how it's random. There is also a whole section on household items like tea towls, aprons, pillow cases and a pincushion.

I like the Red Cross bag which uses both corduroy and cotton fabrics. There are a nuber of bags, including a super simple drawstring bag, a zipper pouch, and a market tote. (A way to use up your fabric stash and make gifts at the same time!)

This Charming Camera Case is easy (and uses some stealth velcro).

I'm thoroughly charmed by the quilts and projects in this book, they are fresh and inspiring. So I'm very happy to have both a copy of the book and a fabric kit to give away. If you'd like to enter please leave a comment with this post, and if you'd like please do take the time to share any quilting projects (or disasters) you've undertaken. I'll go first: I've never quilted anything! Clearly I will have to change that very soon. You have until noon Pacific time on Thursday, April 7th to enter. The usual fine print [4] applies. Quivver Handmade Arrows

quivver2.jpgquivver1.jpg

I've been admiring Quivver's handmade wooden arrows for some time (there's something so alluring about their simple shape and complicated history), but these spiral hitched arrows are really knocking my socks off! I love the embroidered wood and fun colors.

Yarn Bombers Dress Up Vancouver for Mini Maker Faire

yarnbomb_vanc4.jpg

Vancouver BC's first Mini Maker Faire is this weekend, and to help build excitement for the event, a group of local knitters and crocheters joined forces to do a bit of yarn bombing on June 11th, which is also International Yarn Bombing Day. Using their fiber skills and teamwork, these 15 crafty activists beautified the city's Dunsmuir bike lanes with an installation of brightly colored knitting.

I talked with mastermind Emily Smith about how the project came together and what Vancouver thought about it.

How-To: Face Vases

Danny of Daily Danny shares this fun way to upcycle glass bottles using Sculpey and paint. It would be fun to make a whole collection with all the glass bottles in your recycle bin and then line them all up on a shelf.

How-To: Library Tote Bag

LibraryTote1.jpg

This summer, the kids and I are hitting the library on a regular basis, so I'm thinking I need to whip up a couple of these cool library tote bags from Mo Bedell of lime gardenias for Sew, Mama, Sew! I particularly love that there's a pocket on the strap specifically for holding the library card.

It's not well known but one of the best views in Seattle is from the Observation Deck of the Columbia Tower (one of our skyscrapers). To get there you take a bank of elevators up to one floor and transfer over to another bank of elevators and, hold on, what do you find as you're walking past? A Starbucks! A Starbucks with a pretty great view.

Above is one of the first views that greets you from the Observation Deck. I've circled the Space Needle in orange to show you how tiny it seems from the Columbia Tower. See? Cute.

Here is the proof of the Starbucks. It's free to get up to it, by the way.

To get to the observation deck you take the bank of elevators in the North Lobby to the 40th floor, pass by that Starbucks, then take those elevators to the 73rd floor. Follow the signs to the left. It's about $5 per person to get in and then you find yourself looking down at the Space Needle, which is pretty cool. The views are nearly 360 degrees and on a clear day you can see all the surroundings mountains. It's far cheaper than the Space Needle, involves a whole lot less waiting and zero souvenir photographs. (The Space Needle, though, does have glass elevators and a rotating restaurant.) It's one of my favorite places to bring visitors. And not just to show off that yes we really do have Starbucks everywhere.

This is the sediment that is left after you pour a bottle of Russian River Supplication Ale [1]. It's brewed with sour cherries and strains of bacteria and aged for a year in a Pinot Noir barrels. It's delicious, sour and complex, and it's expensive, but so worth it.
