I really like this cross-stitch Mother's Day card from Maggie Makes--the colors really pop and it's nice to see a break from pink! As a word nerd, I must admit the lack of apostrophe gave me pause, but here's the explanation: "Hopefully your mother is not a grammarian.....if she is you can blame me for the lack of apostrophe, I just didn't like the way it looked. Some call it incorrect punctuation, I call it taking creative license." I've never done any cross-stitching, but this is piquing my interest. (Mom, I hope you didn't see that!)

Yesterday I picked up a cherry red Cuisinart ice cream maker so that I could indulge my creative sweet tooth. I've been scouring the web and I can hardly believe this recipe I found on Scoopalicious. Bethany, in a stroke of brilliance, PUT RED VELVET CUPCAKES IN THE ICE CREAM!!! And for this, I will be forever grateful!

When I first saw this fun pair of dress up bird wings from Eri of Llevo el Invierno on Prudent Baby, I thought to myself, "Heck, for the kids, sure ... but I want a pair, too!" Turns out, they were actually inspired by a pair for adults that was shared on Burda Style last fall. Eri's tutorial is for a kid-sized set of wings, but I'm guessing the idea could be easily upsized for adults and would make a really fun family group Halloween costume. You can get the full tutorial over on Prudent Baby.

Sarah over at the Makin' Projiks blog bought a cute toddler shirt for a $1, and then realized it would never work for her young daughter. Rather than throw it out or give it away, she used the fabric and ribbons to create 6 projects of her very own. It's an amazing and inspiring example of upcycling! Crafty ingenuity at its finest.

Whenever I think of the word 'cake' the first image in my mind is a Madiera cake. It's my birthday cake of choice. It has a wonderful texture, and a rich flavor that is hard to beat. In short, I love Madiera cake. It's easy to make, keeps well, and the recipe is simple enough that I don't have to look it up before I start making it. It's a light cake that you can make well in advance of a picnic or tea party, and it always seems to turn out well.

If you ended up with leftover egg dye from Easter, or happen to pick some up on sale this week, check out this fun wreath tutorial from Brenna at Dollar Store Mom. She used egg dye to color rattan balls she found at her local dollar store. I love that they look like balls of brightly colored yarn.

Aubrey and Lindsay at Little House blog have a modern spin on Easter this year with their Painted Rock Eggs. I love that this craft incorporated the beach rocks Lindsay found with her little baby boy Oscar. What a nice way to preserve the memory, celebrate Easter and craft with nature all at once. It's like killing three birds with a bunch of cute painted stones.

Bob Tedeschi wrote about rewiring a lamp in the NY Times!
SOMEHOW, everything I fix ends up far uglier than it was when I started. It's my zero-sum approach to handyman projects: what you gain in functionality, you lose in beauty.
But recently I thought, what if I start with ugly? There would be nothing but upside, right?
I tested this theory last week with my first task in the realm of electrical repair, the rewiring of an old lamp. My local secondhand store had some beautiful old lamps that, with some new wiring, might not burn down my house. But I spared them, and chose something that, no matter what damage I inflicted, couldn't possibly be uglier.

As I mentioned last week, wine cork crafts are constantly requested from the Handmade Detroit gang. As I was thinking of making spring cards the other day a recent craft fair, I turned to the giant bowl of wine corks we have as inspiration.

Years ago, my friend Emma's mother used to make us a traditional German Easter brunch every year. We knew to show up with the very first leaves and flowers of spring, as well as a patiently collected bag of onion skins. Anna would decorate her light-filled apartment with flowers in defiance of the bare winter outside and lay the table with plates and plates of food. And while the final dishes were simmering, we'd make Easter Eggs.
People have been coloring eggs to celebrate spring for literally thousands of years, starting with those cultured Persians. The practice has become ever more complicated as it spread around the world, with everything from stickers and tie-dye in the U.S. to marbling and elaborate wax drawing in parts of Europe and Russia. Crafty early Christians ensured that colored eggs are now mostly associated with Easter, but in Sweden they dye eggs to ring in the summer solstice. Decorated eggs are beautiful at any time of the year, and if you're not attached to the electric pastels of commercial dyes, you can make them with food and spices you probably have lying around the house.

I admit that before I had children, I grew tired of seeing so many "handprint crafts" out in the world. But now that I have kids ... I get it, and I love having any kind of project that uses their handprints as the base. Call me sappy, but I've finally grown to understand the appeal of handprint crafts. I love this take on the handprint from Mollie of Wild Olive. She shares how to turn a child's handprint in to a sweet felt lily brooch, perfect for Easter or general spring fun. It could be a great Mother's Day project, too!
